Practicing Passion

Check out this excerpt from Kenda Creasy Dean's book Practicing Passion, a must read. It begins with a quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer:

"The future of the church does not depend on youth but only on Jesus Christ. The task of young people is not reorganization of the church but listening to God's word; the church's task is not the conquest of young people, but the teaching of the Gospel."

"To Bonhoeffer, only the church mattered, not any church organization, Christian club, or youth group. For all their merits (and there are many) youth groups remain notoriously unreliable for the formation of faith. Faith, it turns out, is far more likely to take root in the contexts of families, congregations, and significant adult-youth relationships-communities where passion is practiced, where people are given to loving others sacrificially, and where we experience sacrificial love on our behalf."

Thought this would be some good stuff for us all to chew on.

Blessings to you as you love on kids this week.

Kenda's book Practicing Passion is still one of my favorites. Her other book Godbearing Life is a great read for looking at the kind of discipleship you talked about in a previous post.
